Timber Fencing Installation and Boundary Repairs in Stretford

High winds and heavy ground across Stretford frequently snap weathered timber posts at soil level or blow out flimsy waney-lap panels along exposed side passages. Insight PS provides durable timber fencing installations and structural boundary repairs across Stretford and the wider Trafford area, replacing rotted lines with heavy-duty feather edge panels and steel-reinforced concrete posts built to stay upright through winter gales.

When assessing a compromised boundary, we examine whether existing post runs can be stabilized with concrete repair spurs or if subsurface rot requires a complete dig-out. In typical semi-detached plots with narrow access, old fence posts leave shattered concrete plugs buried in dense clay soil. We mechanically break out these old plugs down to clean ground, protecting nearby paved paths, patio edging, and neighbouring garden borders from disturbance.

Every replacement post—whether slotted concrete or 100mm pressure-treated timber—is set into the ground to a minimum depth of 600mm and anchored with rapid-setting post-mix concrete, tamped down firmly to prevent hollow pockets. We fit steel-reinforced concrete gravel boards along the base of every run, creating a 150mm to 300mm defensive lift that keeps the timber framing entirely clear of damp, water-retentive garden soil.

For uneven or sloping plots, we step the panels neatly down the boundary line to keep privacy intact without leaving awkward gaps beneath the base rails. We also hang matching treated timber side gates with heavy-duty galvanised T-hinges and ring latches anchored to dedicated timber gate posts. Once the new run is aligned and bolted down, all broken timber, wire, and excavated footings are loaded straight onto our trucks and removed under our registered waste carrier licence.

Durable Timber Fencing & Secure Posts In Stretford.

Built For High Winds Deep concrete post footings and gravel boards to keep your boundary upright.
01

Deep 600mm Post Anchors

We dig post holes to a strict depth of at least 600mm, breaking out old concrete plugs rather than setting posts shallow over buried rubble. Each post is surrounded by dense post-mix aggregate and checked with spirit levels to guarantee the boundary withstands heavy winter wind loads.

02

Rot-Resistant Concrete Gravel Boards

Trafford clay holds substantial surface moisture that quickly rots untreated timber base rails left sitting at soil level. We bed steel-reinforced concrete gravel boards beneath every panel, lifting the timber clear of wet topsoil, garden mulch, and standing rainwater.

03

Heavy-Duty Feather Edge Panels

We fit closeboard feather edge panels constructed with heavy vertical timber pales and thick horizontal backing rails. This robust construction distributes wind pressure far more effectively than thin overlap panels, giving you a quiet, sturdy boundary that stays intact.

04

Complete Site and Spoil Clearance

Storm-damaged timber, snapped posts, and broken concrete footings are never left stacked on your lawn or driveway. As a registered waste carrier, we load all waste directly onto our vehicles as the job proceeds and sweep pathways clean before hand-off.

"Francis and the team at Insight PS resurfaced my backyard this week (it's a terraced house in Gorse Hill, Stretford). Can't give them anything other than 5 stars. The space has been completely transformed from what it was previously. The prior owners of the house had dug the backyard surface up to put decking in, then abandoned the job halfway through. So the whole area was left unlevel and just covered over with cheap black foam tiles to create a makeshift surface. Francis visited the property. Measured everything up. Looked a what needed to be done with the drainage. Then he talked me through the different options available in terms of the block paving colour schemes. Once I had chosen a colour, I quickly received a written quote for the job. The thing that impressed me the most was the speed that the work was completed in. After paying the deposit, the work was arranged to take place the next week. I was sure it'd take multiple days to complete given the extensive nature of the work that needed to be done. But the whole thing was completed, with a new drainage system in a single day. The finished job looks spot on. And the guys who worked on the backyard knew exactly what they were doing. The whole thing ran like clockwork. Would definitely recommend to a friend or anyone else in Manchester or Liverpool who needs similar work done."

Fencing & Boundary Advice

Frequently Asked Questions About Timber Fencing

Practical guidance on post depths, storm-damaged panels, gravel boards, and boundary installations across Stretford and Manchester.

Why should I choose concrete posts over timber posts for a garden fence in Stretford?

+

Timber posts set directly into Stretford's moisture-retentive ground tend to rot through at the soil line within five to eight years. Slotted concrete posts never rot, and because timber panels simply slide into the rebates, you can swap out a damaged panel in minutes without disturbing the footings. We always advise concrete posts paired with concrete gravel boards to ensure your boundary stays rigid through wet North West winters.

Do I really need concrete gravel boards beneath my feather edge panels?

+

Yes, because keeping the base of the timber clear of damp turf and soil stops the bottom edges of the boards from rotting out prematurely. A concrete gravel board creates a solid six-inch barrier between wet ground and your timber, protecting the fence from lawnmower strikes and pooling rainwater. It also prevents soil, gravel, and mulch from washing under the fence line into the adjoining garden.

Can you repair a few storm-damaged fence panels without replacing the whole run?

+

If your existing posts are structurally sound and sitting plumb, we can quickly slide in replacement feather edge panels and secure any loose battens without touching the rest of the run. Where an old timber post has snapped off at ground level in high winds, we break out the old concrete plug, set a new post in fresh concrete, and rehang the existing panels if they are unbroken. We only recommend a full replacement when multiple posts have failed or the entire line is leaning out of upright.

How deep do you dig post holes to keep a standard 6ft timber fence stable?

+

For a standard six-foot timber fence, we dig post holes down to a minimum depth of 600mm (two feet) into the ground. That depth gives the post the mechanical leverage it needs to resist the sail effect of high winds hitting solid feather edge panels. We tamp the base firm, position the post true with a spirit level, and lock it in with a dense mix of concrete compacted down to expel trapped air.

Can you hang a timber garden gate directly onto an existing concrete fence post?

+

You cannot screw gate hinges directly into slotted concrete posts without cracking the concrete or fouling the internal steel reinforcing rods. Instead, we bolt a treated timber fixing batten securely to the concrete post, which allows us to mount heavy-duty galvanised band and hook hinges directly to the timber. This spreads the weight of the gate evenly and stops the latch from dropping out of alignment over time.

How do you handle fence lines where heavy tree roots or old footings block the post holes?

+

Established gardens in Stretford often have old concrete post collars, boundary walls, or thick roots sitting right where a new post needs to drop. We break out old buried concrete using heavy demolition breakers and cut away non-structural roots using root-cutting tools to clear the hole to full depth. If an immovable obstacle sits on the boundary line, we adjust the post spacing or custom-cut the panels on site so the finished fence line remains straight and solid.
