Groundworks and Surface Water Drainage in Stretford
Insight PS Limited delivers domestic groundworks, site excavation, and surface water drainage across Stretford and the surrounding Trafford area. Ground conditions in this part of the Mersey basin frequently feature heavy, water-retentive clay subsoils that swell during prolonged North West downpours and hold surface moisture for weeks. Without correct excavation depth, sub-base isolation, and proper falls, newly paved surfaces and lawns quickly suffer from waterlogging, rutting, or sub-base failure.
Every project begins with a practical assessment of subsoil density, natural slope, and existing outfalls. We clear overgrown turf, broken concrete aprons, and unstable subsoil using 1.5-tonne mini diggers and high-tip tracked dumpers that navigate tight residential side passages without damaging boundary fences. We excavate down to a solid formation level, generally between 200mm and 250mm, stripping back soft organic material until we hit firm, load-bearing ground.
To prevent the crushed stone sub-base from sinking into saturated clay, we roll out high-tensile geotextile separation membranes across the excavated formation. We then build up structural bases using certified MOT Type 1 aggregate, spreading and compacting the material in measured 75mm layers with heavy mechanical plate compactors. This layered compaction eliminates hidden air pockets, ensuring the base will not hollow or sink under vehicle weight.
Surface water management is built directly into our ground preparation. We install linear polymer concrete ACO channels along garage thresholds and boundaries, set fall gradients at precise 1:60 to 1:80 falls, and install modular attenuation soakaway crates wrapped in protective fleece. This keeps runoff well away from residential brickwork while keeping your front frontage compliant with Trafford Council SuDS regulations.
