Solid Brickwork and Retaining Walls in Stretford
We build and rebuild structural brick garden walls and retaining walls across Stretford, replacing leaning boundaries, cracked pillars, and crumbling masonry that can no longer support shifting ground. A garden wall fails when shallow footings shift in heavy clay or when trapped groundwater pushes relentlessly against unvented brickwork. We inspect the subsoil conditions, identify frost-spalled bricks and cracked joints, and explain whether a compromised structure can be safely repaired or needs excavation down to firm ground.
Durability depends entirely on what sits below the surface. We dig footing trenches between 300mm and 450mm deep to reach firm sub-grade, square off the trench bed, and pour a mass concrete strip footing at least twice the thickness of the planned wall. While low decorative borders under 450mm can stand as single-skin half-brick structures, boundary walls above that height are constructed as full double-skin 215mm brickwork. We tie in bonded piers every 2.5 to 3 metres to ensure rigid lateral strength, staying fully compliant with local boundary height rules.
Retaining walls require active drainage to handle the substantial weight of wet soil. Behind the brickwork, we lay perforated land drain coils wrapped in geotextile fabric, backfill with free-draining clean pea shingle, and set plastic weep vents every four bricks along the bottom course. Matching red facing bricks to the traditional housing stock of Stretford, we lay high-density engineering bricks below the damp line and top the wall with weathered concrete copings designed with drip grooves to shed rainwater away from the face.
Site management is kept orderly throughout. We coordinate skip drops on residential avenues, protect access lawns with heavy boards, and cut bricks with water-suppression tools to minimise dust. Most residential wall installations take between three and five working days, leaving your boundary structurally square, neatly pointed, and thoroughly swept down.
