Indian Sandstone and Paving in Stretford

Homeowners across Stretford frequently deal with waterlogged back lawns, spalling council utility slabs, and tired concrete paths that hold puddles right outside the back door. When ground shifts or old mortar disintegrates, garden access turns into a muddy chore and rainwater can risk bridging your damp-proof course. We construct durable Indian sandstone patios, porcelain paving, and garden pathways designed specifically to handle local ground conditions, giving you a clean, level outdoor space that drains properly.

Every project begins with a realistic assessment of your garden levels and soil structure. Much of Trafford sits on stubborn clay that retains water for days after a downpour. We dig out the footprint to a depth of 150mm to 200mm, stripping away organic topsoil down to a solid subgrade. We lay a heavy-duty geotextile membrane to stop the sub-base sinking into soft ground, then build up a foundation using MOT Type 1 crushed stone, compacted in uniform layers with a vibrating plate. This eliminates the underground voids that cause slabs to dip and crack.

For the paving itself, we avoid shortcut methods like dot-and-dab ring bedding, which leaves hollow pockets where trapped water freezes and snaps the stone. Slabs are laid individually onto a full 30mm to 40mm wet mortar bed mixed with sharp sand and cement. The underside of each natural stone flag or porcelain tile is coated with an SBR bonding slurry to form a permanent mechanical bond. We set falls at a minimum 1:60 pitch, directing rainwater cleanly into borders, soakaways, or discreet linear channel drains.

We keep site disruption under control from day one. Narrow side passages and shared driveways are protected with ground boards to preserve turf and tarmac. Waste is cleared responsibly under our registered carrier licence, and cutting areas are managed with water suppression to limit stone dust. Most domestic patio installations take between three and seven working days, leaving your boundary walls, lawns, and brickwork clean and ready to use.

Built On Solid Ground

Patios Built On Full Mortar Beds & Solid Sub-Bases.

Newly installed block paved pathway and artificial grass lawn with garden borders
Trafford Groundwork Standards Compacted Type 1 MOT aggregate, full wet beds, and clean falls to stop standing water.
01

Full Wet Mortar Bedding

We lay every slab onto an unbroken bed of wet mortar rather than five-spot dabs. Backing each flag with an SBR primer slurry ensures the stone bonds solid to the foundation, preventing rocking underfoot and stopping winter frost from lifting the surface.

02

Protected Damp-Proof Clearances

We carefully establish site levels so finished paving sits at least 150mm below your property's internal damp-proof course. Falls are accurately set to run water away from external walls, tying into channel drains or soakaways to safeguard your brickwork.

03

Polymeric Jointing Compounds

We finish paving joints with durable, brush-in polymeric compounds that set firm in the damp North West climate. Unlike dry sand and cement mixes, these flexible joints flex with seasonal movement, resist power washing, and stop weeds from rooting between flags.

04

Concrete Edge Haunching

Pathways and patio borders only remain true if the perimeter is locked in tight. We set all edge slabs, steps, and brick risers on a solid concrete foundation with rear haunching, stopping lateral movement where paving meets lawn or garden borders.

"Francis and the team at Insight PS resurfaced my backyard this week (it's a terraced house in Gorse Hill, Stretford). Can't give them anything other than 5 stars. The space has been completely transformed from what it was previously. The prior owners of the house had dug the backyard surface up to put decking in, then abandoned the job halfway through. So the whole area was left unlevel and just covered over with cheap black foam tiles to create a makeshift surface. Francis visited the property. Measured everything up. Looked a what needed to be done with the drainage. Then he talked me through the different options available in terms of the block paving colour schemes. Once I had chosen a colour, I quickly received a written quote for the job. The thing that impressed me the most was the speed that the work was completed in. After paying the deposit, the work was arranged to take place the next week. I was sure it'd take multiple days to complete given the extensive nature of the work that needed to be done. But the whole thing was completed, with a new drainage system in a single day. The finished job looks spot on. And the guys who worked on the backyard knew exactly what they were doing. The whole thing ran like clockwork. Would definitely recommend to a friend or anyone else in Manchester or Liverpool who needs similar work done."

Practical Paving Advice

Patio & Pathway Installation Questions

Straightforward guidance on excavation depths, sub-base preparation, mortar bedding, and garden drainage across Manchester.

How deep do you excavate for a new Indian sandstone patio in Stretford?

+

We dig down between 150mm and 200mm below the surrounding ground level, depending on whether we hit the dense, water-retaining clay common across Trafford. We then lay a heavy-duty geotextile membrane to stop the sub-base pressing into the soft subgrade, followed by a minimum of 100mm of compacted MOT Type 1 hardcore. This solid foundation prevents the patio from sinking, rutting, or shifting during winter freezes.

Why do you lay patio paving on a full wet mortar bed rather than sand or spot dabs?

+

Spot bedding on dabs of mortar leaves hollow pockets underneath the slabs that fill with water, crack under foot traffic, and cause reflective dark stains on the surface of porous natural stone. We lay every flag on a continuous, full wet mortar bed mixed with sharp sand and cement, applying an SBR bonding slurry primer to the underside of each stone. This full-contact bond ensures the slabs never rock, lift, or break away from the ground.

How far below the damp proof course must a new patio sit against a Stretford house?

+

The finished paving surface must sit at least 150mm—two full brick courses—below your property's damp proof course to stop rain splashback and rising damp entering your cavity walls. We build a consistent fall of at least 1:60 to 1:80 sloping directly away from the brickwork so rainwater runs off into borders or drainage lines rather than ponding against the brick foundations of your home.

What type of jointing do you use between patio slabs to stop weeds and frost damage?

+

We use brush-in polymeric resin compounds or flowable external jointing grouts rather than old-fashioned sand-and-cement mixes. Traditional mortar jointing is brittle and tends to crack after a couple of harsh North West winters, letting weeds take root in the gaps. Dedicated resin jointing flexes with subtle ground movement, cures completely water-resistant, and provides a clean, solid finish that weed roots cannot penetrate.

How do you construct garden pathways so the edges do not spread into the lawn?

+

A garden path needs rigid lateral support along both sides to stop the paving pushing outwards when walked on. We dig a dedicated trench, compact a solid aggregate base, and bed the perimeter stones or edging kerbs into wet concrete with concrete haunching supporting the outer shoulders. This concrete haunching stays buried just below your lawn or soil line, keeping the path firmly locked in place while remaining completely invisible from above.

Is porcelain or Indian sandstone a better choice for a shaded, north-facing garden in Stretford?

+

Vitrified porcelain is usually the better option for shaded or damp plots because its non-porous surface absorbs virtually zero water, meaning green algae and moss cannot penetrate the body of the tile. Indian sandstone works well if you want a softer, traditional cleft finish for an older property, but because it is porous, it requires regular seasonal sweeping and a breathable sealer to stop tree sap and dampness from staining the stone.
