How We Work in Royton

Although our yard and office are based in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Royton sits comfortably within our normal working radius. Our crews head up the M60 and onto the A663 Broadway or Oldham Road early in the morning, meaning we are on site with diggers, tippers, and compaction gear at the start of the working day.

Sitting on the edge of the Pennines, plots in Royton often combine heavy, wet clay ground with noticeable gradients from the road up to the house or across the back garden. When water sits in clay beneath a thin sub-base, frost heave and vehicle weight soon cause ruts, sunken wheel tracks, or rocking patio flags.

Whether we are digging out a front garden off Rochdale Road, replacing an old concrete run-in near Tandle Hill, or levelling a stepped lawn, we build from the sub-grade upwards:

• 01. Proper Excavation Depth: For driveways, we dig out 200mm to 250mm down into the underlying clay, removing all soft topsoil and old broken concrete rather than skimming over the top.
• 02. Membrane & MOT Type 1 Sub-Base: We lay a heavy-duty geotextile membrane to stop aggregate punching into wet soil, then compact quarried Type 1 hardcore in layers using heavy plate compactors.
• 03. Concrete Edge Restraints & Falls: Perimeter kerbs and edging blocks are haunched in concrete before the main surface goes down, and levels are set with a string line and laser so rainwater runs into linear ACO drains or compliant soakaways—never towards your damp-proof course or out onto the pavement.
