Driveway, Paving & Landscaping Services Across Manchester
At Insight PS Limited, we spend our working days excavating North West clay, setting accurate drainage falls, and laying solid sub-bases that do not sink or shift. As an independent, family-run contractor with over 25 years of hands-on experience in Roofing, Paving and Groundworks, we handle the entire job from initial dig-out to the final sweep-down.
Completed herringbone block paving installation with recessed linear ACO channel drainage and concrete-haunched kerbs.
Our Core Groundwork & Surfacing Services
Whether we are digging out a waterlogged front lawn for a multi-car driveway or rebuilding a leaning boundary wall, every job follows the same groundwork discipline. We do not cut corners on excavation depth, membrane separation, or sub-base compaction.
Block, Tarmac & Resin
Driveway Installations
A driveway is only as strong as the ground underneath it. On typical South Manchester clay subsoils, we excavate to 200mm–250mm, lay a heavy-duty geotextile membrane, and compact MOT Type 1 hardcore in layers using heavy plate compactors before laying your chosen surface.
- • Block Paving: Screeded sharp sand bed, herringbone or stretcher bond patterns, concrete-haunched edges, and kiln-dried jointing sand.
- • Tarmac (Asphalt): Machine-rolled base and wearing courses with granite sett or block paving kerbs for crisp edge restraint.
- • Resin-Bound Surfacing: UV-stable resin mixed with natural aggregate and hand-trowelled over an open-grade tarmac or concrete base.
Sandstone & Natural Stone
Patios & Garden Pathways
Slabs rock and crack when they are spot-bedded on five dabs of mortar. We lay all Indian sandstone and natural stone paving on a full, wet mortar bed over a compacted Type 1 sub-base, priming the back of each slab with an SBR bonding slurry so it locks solidly to the bed.
- • Indian Sandstone & Limestone: Riven or sawn natural stone flags laid with consistent joint widths and weather-resistant pointing.
- • Garden Paths & Access: Winding or straight walkways tying front gates, side returns, and rear seating areas together at safe DPC levels.
- • Fall & Runoff Control: Set out with spirit levels and string lines so rainwater drains cleanly away from house walls.
Releveling & Restorations
Paving Repairs & Releveling
If your existing block paving has wheel ruts, sunken patches over old trenches, or spreading edges, you do not always need a complete rip-out. Because blocks are modular, we can lift the affected area, fix the failed sub-base underneath, and relay the original blocks flush.
- • Sunken Block Rectification: Lifting dipped wheel tracks, topping up and compacting Type 1 stone, screeding fresh sharp sand, and relaying.
- • Edge Restraint Repairs: Re-bedding loose kerb stones or soldier courses into fresh concrete haunching to stop lateral spread.
- • Standing Water Fixes: Adjusting surface levels and fitting recessed inspection covers or channel drains where puddles collect.
Turf, Artificial Grass & Borders
Landscaping & Garden Makeovers
Heavy clay gardens across Greater Manchester often turn into boggy moss patches over winter. We clear overgrown plots, improve ground drainage, and build practical gardens combining hardwearing lawns, neat sleeper beds, and stone paving.
- • Natural Turfing: Rotavating, levelling with screened sandy topsoil, and laying fresh cultivated rolls of lawn turf.
- • Artificial Grass: Excavated stone base, granite dust blinding layer, weed membrane, and secured perimeter fixings for year-round use.
- • Full Garden Construction: Combining new patios, raised planting borders, decorative aggregate beds, and clean edging stones.
Boundaries & Storm Repairs
Timber Fencing & Repairs
Fence lines fail when timber posts rot at ground level or shallow footings give way in high winds. We dig deep post holes, concrete posts securely into the ground, and fit concrete gravel boards to keep all timber clear of damp soil.
- • Concrete Posts & Gravel Boards: Slotted concrete posts and recessed base boards that resist rot and allow easy panel replacement.
- • Feather Edge & Panel Fencing: Heavy-duty closeboard panels, pressure-treated feather edge boarding, and matching side gates.
- • Storm Damage Replacement: Clearing snapped posts, breaking out old concrete collars, and re-establishing straight boundary lines.
Brickwork & Retaining Structures
Brick & Retaining Walls
Sloping plots and split-level gardens require properly engineered brickwork to hold back wet earth. We pour trench-fill concrete foundations, build double-skin or hollow-block retaining walls, and incorporate weep holes so hydrostatic water pressure cannot push the wall over.
- • Garden Retaining Walls: Structural brickwork and blockwork stepped into sloping lawns with rear drainage aggregate and weep vents.
- • Front Boundary Walls & Pillars: Face brickwork chosen to match existing property masonry, finished with stone or brick-on-edge copings.
- • Steps & Raised Beds: Brick risers with natural stone or block treads providing safe access between tiered patio levels.
Excavation, Sub-Bases & SuDS
Groundworks & Surface Water Drainage
Every successful paving project starts below ground. Using our own mini-excavators, dumpers, and heavy compaction plates, we carry out site clearance, muck-away under registered waste transfer notes, and full MOT Type 1 sub-base installation. Under UK Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) rules, any non-permeable front driveway over 5 square metres must manage its own rainwater runoff rather than letting it flow onto the public highway.
Linear ACO Channel Drains
Haunched in concrete along garage thresholds and property boundaries to intercept surface sheet water.
Crated Soakaways & Recessed Covers
Geotextile-wrapped attenuation crates set safely away from house footings, plus recessed manhole trays filled with matching paving.
What to Expect When Our Team Is On Your Property
Having diggers and skips outside your home is disruptive if a contractor leaves the site half-dug for weeks while juggling other jobs. We work as a dedicated project team: once we start excavating your driveway or garden, we stay on your job until it is finished and swept down.
Site Survey & Written Fixed Estimate
We visit your property, check access width for machinery, locate underground inspection chambers, measure levels against your damp-proof course (DPC), and provide a clear written breakdown with no hidden extras.
Excavation, Spoil Removal & Protection
Most domestic driveways and patios take between 3 and 7 working days. We lay protective boards over lawns or shared accessways, arrange grab lorries or skips promptly, and remove all clay and rubble legally as a licensed waste carrier.
Water-Suppressed Cutting & Tidy Handover
When cutting perimeter blocks or stone slabs with a Stihl saw, we use water suppression to keep brick and stone dust off your windows and neighbours' cars. Before leaving, we wash down adjacent paths and sweep the site clean.
1. Mechanical Dig-Out
Excavating soft clay down to solid bearing ground before laying geotextile membrane.
2. Sub-Base & Screeding
Compacted Type 1 hardcore topped with screeded sharp sand ready for block laying.
3. Clean Finished Surfacing
Machine-rolled tarmac and block edging completed on schedule with all spoil cleared from site.
