A large proportion of the established post-war housing and hillside plots around Rochdale sit on heavy, moisture-retentive clay subsoils prone to winter waterlogging. If a driveway or patio is laid over a shallow or poorly compacted base on this type of ground, the clay holds water, softens beneath the sub-base, and causes the surface to sink or rut under the weight of parked vehicles.

To prevent movement, we dig out driveways to a proper structural depth of 200mm to 250mm depending on ground conditions and vehicle load. We line the excavated trench with a heavy-duty geotextile membrane to stop the stone sinking into the damp clay sub-grade, then build up and compact MOT Type 1 hardcore in uniform layers using heavy mechanical plate compactors. All perimeter edges and kerbs are bedded and haunched in strong concrete before the final surface goes down, ensuring nothing spreads laterally over time.

Where gardens or front aprons slope toward the house or pavement, we set accurate surface falls and install linear ACO channel drains connected into compliant soakaways, keeping surface water well away from your property's damp-proof course and off the public footpath.
